Areas of Interest:

1. Empower herders/pastoralists to participate in development planning: In Kenya, pastoralists community regularly miss out from participation in annual development planning because of poor communication where the information about scheduled public participation programs don’t reach the remote communities where most livestock keepers live. This needs to be improved through development of master plans where developments are projected into years ahead instead of rushed annual planning and also by improve communication.

2. Increase Budgetary allocation to Livestock Sector: There’s a policy declaration, Maputo declaration, that Production sector should at least receive 10% of the Government’s annual budget to improve food security. This is not often honored by successive governments and needs to be implemented to enhance development of Livestock Value chains with strategic focus on research and development. The increased budget will also improve extension services that’s currently so crippled leaving pastoralists to access minimal critical information on weather and market conditions.

3.Review, harmonize and implement existing policies: There are so many policies that are lying idle. These policies can be helpful in increasing revenue base if implemented. They will also help in improving resource allocation while increasing development in the value chain especially regarding trade regulations, disease control and revenue collection.
