Salome W. Kimani

Financial Inclusion and International Development Specialist

Salome joined CGAP in October 2023 and currently works on CGAP’s initiatives focused on micro and small enterprise (MSE) finance in the digital age. She has extensive experience in advancing the financial sustainability of microfinance institutions and promoting financial and digital inclusion for MSMEs, migrants, women, youth, and refugees across Africa.

Before joining CGAP, she led a four-year longitudinal study examining the complex dynamics of MSEs and their economic, financial, and digital roles in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in the context of challenges arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Previously, Salome served as a Senior Consultant at the African Development Bank (AfDB), where she contributed to the Somalia Work Program and acted as the main liaison officer for the AfDB Somalia Remittances Work Program. In this role, she advised the Somali government on strategies to increase remittance flows and enhance access to financial services for youth, women, refugees, and migrants.

Earlier in her career, she worked as a Communications Specialist at Kenya Power, where she was responsible for managing communications with the media, stakeholders, and community members.

Salome holds a PhD from Queen Mary University of London, where her research focused on remaking urban marketplaces and the everyday financial practices of MSEs, and a Master’s degree in International Development from the University of Manchester.
